A study published in September by 4 researchers from the University of Cincinnati, in the United States, concludes that silk is the best material for reusable masks.
The group of researchers tested 3 types of fabric in the laboratory, cotton, silk and polyester, with the aim of defining which was the most effective material for making reusable masks.
The characteristics taken into account for this study were on the one hand hydrophobicity, i.e. resistance to the penetration of droplets and the evolution of this quality with repeated washing, and on the other hand breathability.
And on all these criteria, silk comes out on top!
Not only would silk masks be a better barrier against the droplets responsible for transmitting the virus, but they are more breathable and much more comfortable to wear. Additionally, silk is lighter than other fabrics, repels moisture and dries faster. This helps prevent the dampness of other fabrics which appears after a certain period of use and causes discomfort such as redness, irritation and pimples.
The study also highlights that silk has antimicrobial, antiviral and antibacterial qualities, potentially due to the presence of copper.
And a final aspect, not highlighted by scientific study, is the aesthetic aspect of silk! Silk is our favorite material at Vannina Vesperini. Vannina uses it for the vast majority of her creations, such as her iconic silk camisole, the Original or her silk slips.
